BITAR, S. (1986). Chile Experiment in democracy. Philadelphia: Institute for the Study of Human Issues.

Few political experiences have had the resonance of the attempt in Chile to implement a democratic transition to socialism. World public opinion was focused on Chile throughout this unusual three-year period, 1970-73, when a political coalition of the Left -The Unidad Popular – won an electoral triumph and initiated a far-reaching process of transformations to be carried out within the existing institutional order.

Sergio Bitar, a member of the Allende Cabinet with access to a wealth of previously unpublished information, offers here a thoroughgoing and incisive analysis of Chile’s socialist years, one whit telling implications for Latin America and entire Third World.
